COMPATIBILITY: Do well in a mixed environment.

PET APPEAL: Well known for their beautiful song and variety of colours

Georgie
A 10 month old male canary, he came to live here because his previous owner found out she was allergic to him. He lived in a tiny cage, though he did have lots of toys. Upon his arrival he moved into a huge cage, and discovered fruit and vegetables for the first time.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a female canary and arrived the day after Georgie, her original owners are unknown. She went into quarantine with Georgie and they have established a very close bond. Breeding between these will not be encouraged.

31st July 2002

We had a new Canary, join us a few months ago. It had flown into someone's garden and had allowed itself to be picked up. It sings so loud and proud its quite amazing. After having Canaries for a long time, I assumed that only males sang, but this one is a girl and has the eggs to prove it. They are all very happy and look forward to their fruit and vegetables.

17th July 2003

We only have one canary living with us now, its a male, and he sings very loud. He is currently living with the zebra finches until the new aviary is up

January 7th 2004. The canary is still oib his own, we did have someone who wanted to adopt him but he was so settled with the finches that we decided he might as well stay and just retire.  He has a bit of a bad leg, and though it does not slow him down makes him look a bit strange.  The finches take time to sit with him and its quite strange to see a huge yellow puff ball with the dinky Zebra's.

Sadly we dont have any canaries, they are a very special and a very inteligent bird

Pearly Conure -- Pyrhurra lepida perlata
DISTRIBUTION: Cumã Bay, Maranhão west to Belém and Rio Capim, Pará, Brazil.
SIZE: 24 cm (9.5 ins)
DIET: plenty of fruit, vegetables and green-food; regular supply of branches with flowers and buds; seed mix of safflower, oats, some sunflower (also sprouted), hemp, buckwheat, millets, canary seed and rowan berries; millet spray; mineral and vitamin supplements.
SEXING: Males usually have very blue cheeks and have red and blue on the underside of the wing
COMPATIBILITY: Best in pairs
PET APPEAL: Nice as pets, but would prefer aviary situation. They are difficult to breed due to polycystic ovarian syndrome found in the females.

31st July 2002

We had Kringle as a pet, and though he dos not like to be held, he would tolerate it. We recently got Jirdy, a female, whose owner tragically died at a very young age. Jirdy talks, and whistles and loves to have her head scratched. Kringle and Jirdy are smitten with each other and spend hours loving to preen.

17th July 2003,

Kringle & Jirdy are soooooooo much in love and are never more than a few centimentres apart. You can not seperate them and they have eyes only for eachother. They are very special and I love them to bits

January 7th 2004

Well we have one more pearly who was called Poppy but upon arrival I saw that it was in fact a male so now goes by the name of Poppet.  He does not share with the other two (Kringle & Jirdy) but he loves to sit with me and helps me type and do my work and studies so he gets plenty of interraction. He can be tempramental too, but its just part of who he is.  Kringle & Jirdy are both doing fantastically well.

22nd June 2005

We dont have Kringle any more, but Jirdy & Poppet are having a great time, and are falling in love.  They are quite chatty, and Jirdy will shout I love you". Awwwwwww.  New pictures to follow

Senegal
DISTRIBUTION: From Senegal to Chad
size: 23cm (9in)
DIET: Parrot mixture, pine nuts, peanuts, greens
SEXING: Very difficult to sex by sight
COMPATIBILITY: Best kept alone or in pairs
PET APPEAL: Small, can become very tame and even learn to say a few words

31st July 2002

We have a pair of Senegal's, that were owned by a young woman who tragically died very young. Wazzik is the male, he is quiet but very curious at the same time. Little wing, named because as an import she had a broken wing that had to be amputated. Even though she can not fly, she gets round by climbing. They are not noisy but in the afternoon their chat time starts and they continuously chatter for hours. Though they are timid, (being wild caught) they are very curious about their surroundings and love to watch what you are doing.

January 7th 2004

Little wing sadly passed away, but Wazz is doing great and is still full of attitude.  I have been placing cages around him with other birds so that he can get used to them, because I am hoping that if we ever get an aviary up he will be able to share with some of the other birds.
