The Aviary Phase 1

This aviary we had to leave behind when we moved.  So now the birds are in cages waiting for us to raise enough funds to build a new home for them.  We have had some fund raising events but not enough for us to get a shed.  I have funded everything myself for 14 years and this time I have to put my cap in hand and ask for help because I just dont have the funds.  Its a shame for me too look at these pics and think of all the hard work that went into building and maintaining the aviary that we had to leave, but I guess such is life, just keep your fingers crossed that we can get a shed, and that our residents can go back to living normal lives instead of being caged

With so many new birds arriving, we need more space to house them and for them to fly.
It was decided to get a new shed, convert it and put on new flight panels.

The old aviary will then be converted should we need more space in the future.

Phase 1 a
Phase 1a involved trying to dig a level area for concreting for the shed to be housed on. The ground is nothing but rock, slate and bricks.

It was hard going, and after blisters and a lot of heaving, an area big enough was dug.
Phase 1b
Once the ground had been prepared the cementing job came next. The delivery van could not get any where near where we needed the building materials so there was a lot of heaving and lugging.

I carried a whole ton of aggregate from the front to the rear of the house. The cement was then mixed, and laid. It decided when we were half way finished that it would rain, and not just a shower, but a real downpour. Well its safe to say we looked a sight for sore eyes. Soaking wet, covered in cement, but at least the base was done. All that was left for that phase was to let it dry.
Phase 2
Phase 2 was to take delivery of the flight panels, get them painted up. I have spent most of the day painting the panels and prepping the rest of the area ready for phase 3.

Some of the flight panels have been painted with a green stain (bird safe) and some have been painted brown. The brown will be placed as the roof panels and the side facing the fence, and the green will be facing out wards. There is no reason for this other than my preference.

Phase 3
Phase 3 was a long time coming with repeated delays from the supplier. This phase was the easiest for us, as the supplier also erected the shed.
Though in the picture it looks small, it is 6 foot by 6 foot. It will have a box built in to it, with lightning fitted and hospital cages stored for when needed. There will also be a CCTV camera fitted for both security and to enable us to keep an eye on the birds from inside the house. Phase 3 completed, yipiiiiiiiiiiii
Phase 4
Phase 4a, involved digging a large area for the flight. Encountering a large amount of discarded builders rubble, it felt like I was digging to china rather than 1 foot down. The area had to be raised considerably on 2 sides and lowered even more on the other 2 sides. It is now level and awaiting the cement and panels.

Phase 4b Cementing We decided to place the panels, cement after and fill the area between the slabs. It all fitted perfectly.
Phase 5
The box, to be built inside the new shed. This will serve to keep part of the shed for the hospital cages and seed and also means the box part for the birds is insulated. The box is finished!!!, In the end I came up with a great idea to give them a little more space in the box. They now have almost a Swiss style box, with a platform for those who find it difficult to perch and lots of perches. It is 6 by 3 inside with all wire panelling.
It will also serve as a rest place for those that need some shade.
Phase 6 Completion
The Birds have moved into their new home and are very happy. The flight will be extended at a later date, but we want to demolish and re-build the old aviary, Keep checking to see what gets done!!!!!!!
