  More about the Lory
Being predominantly nectar eaters, there is a tendency for very messy droppings. People buy these birds because of their colour, but feed them an all seed diet, this is not suitable for the Lory.
There are several commercial nectar products on sale, or you can make it up yourself.

These birds can be very noisy, and loud, and can aggravate neighbours if housed outside in an aviary.

Sudden changes in diet can lead to bacterial changes in the gut, which could lead to a fatal bout of enterotoxaemia.

Oscar
Lories are very inquisitive birds, and need a lot of space to investigate. They are often known as the hanging parrot, because of their acrobatic antics.

They can talk, and learn words with ease, but like a lot of the other talking parrots, they talk when they want to and not when you want them too.

These birds are inexpensive, but can live for 30-40 years in some cases, and with their specialist diet, these are not birds to get on a whim.

  OSCAR

Oscar, who is an UN-DNA sexed cock (certain things he does makes us believe he is a cock bird) is six years old. He is blind, but this does not prevent him from living a full active life. Toys and feeding bowls are always returned to the same place, to avoid confusion. When he is out, extra care has to be taken to ensure that he does not come in to contact with any hazards.
He feels insecure when he is out and prefers to be sitting on or in his cage, and he bites very hard when scared or caught unaware.

He talks and sings, imitates the telephone, and wants to get in on any conversations which are happening.

UPDATE 30TH DECEMBER 2001

Oscar is doing really well, and we have moved on to commercially made nectar, which he has settled with really well. He seems very chatty and is learning new words from Poppy & Jasper (Eclectus) He has stopped trying to bite and will try to investigate first.

21st April 2002

Oscar loves to imitate me sneezing and then laughs at me after wards, its so funny to hear him repeating things. He does not like to come out of his cage, which distresses me, but coming out of the cage distresses him so whilst he is happy then we respect that's what he wants. He now loves rice (which he would only pick up and throw around before) and its not unusual to see him with a face full of it.

31st July 2002

Well Oscar gave us a fright, he had some lumps appear around his neck, they looked awful though after a spray they looked a lot better. A very swift visit to the vet confirmed that Oscar did in fact have lumps on his neck, but that this was caused by him using his nectar as a necklace. After switching to the commercial nectar, he decided he liked to wear it as well as eat it, so now we have to make sure that we soak him extra around the neck area. The vet says it will not cause any harm or discomfort, and he is healthy.

17th July 2003

Oscar seems to have settled really well into our new home, obviously for him its more difficult as he can not see his surroundings but he seems more settled and content and generally happy.

7th January 2004

Oscar seems to be very happy all the time now, he lays on his back and plays and sings.  He is still very wary if anything gets moved, so his cage is kept the same all the time.  He has his favourite toys and as far as Oscar is concerned, thats all he needs.  I am hoping that at some point I can get some toys for Oscar that will really stimulate him into being a bit more active and interested.

June 21st 2005.

What can I say Oscar is a star, the fact that he cant see does not seem to himder him in any way.  He loves to lay and cuddle his toys, though if you dont make noise when approaching him, he will bite and very very hard, but is he knows you are there he seems to be happy to sit and talk to you for a while.
